How To Fix Car Scratches

Your car can get scratches in unexpected circumstances, and more often that not, you just don't know how and when it happens. Remember that larger or deep scratches and dents may require professional help. However, small scratches can be fixed by yourself and you don't need to go to a paint shop. All you need to have are some repair tools and basic knowledge on how to fix car scratches.

A tube of touch-up paint and primer can do the work. Just make sure it matches your car's paint color. Consult your car owner's manual and check for chemicals or products that are bad for your car's finish.

Before fixing the scratches, you need to wash the scratches and surrounding areas with a mild laundry detergent.. Carefully scratch the affected area with fine-grained sandpaper to remove any rust and to fine the surface. Clean away any dust from the sanding by using soft brush. Put masking tape and newspaper around the scratches. Leave an inch around it. Afterwards, you can now apply the paint. Use a plastic putty knife to apply body compound to the scratches. Remember that a metal one can add more damage to the paint.

Read the label instructions for proper applications. After the compound dries and hardens, you have to sand the spot flat and blow away the dust. Spray the primer paint to the scratches then let it dry overnight. Finally, you have to use touch-up paint. Let it dry again over night.
